What I've been doing lately, It's a sin to not be baptized
a)
Things I have enjoyed lately:
- This thing they sell outside my house that is like a giant round youtiao with sweet stuff on it.
- Reading about Vietnam
- Niel Young and Bruce Cockburn
- Free Shepherd’s Conference audio
- Frozen Char Siew Bao
b)
(Not what you might think it's about)
So, I’ve wanted to encourage people over here to get baptized. I’ve lately been reminded that it’s a command, not an option.
But I can’t find many resources online to help. Maybe it’s just what I’ve been reading and seeing lately (in other words, Reformed stuff), but it seems that although many argue, rightly so, over how it should be done, few people are teaching why it should be done. I do not see many championing the truth that Baptism is an important part of the Christian life.
Out of forty years of preaching, John Macarthur has one single resource that explains why someone should be baptized (to be fair, in it he confesses that he has not given it as much weight as it should have). Capitol Hill Baptist Church’s extensive audio/resource page had no relevant resources at all. Finally, I found only John Piper (also a Baptist) to have a few resources available (very few, considering the impressive volume of resources on his desiringgod.org).
When you think about it, the pressure isn’t even on the Baptists. Almost every denomination agrees that if you are a convert who’s never been baptized or sprinkled as a child, you are commanded by the Word of God to be baptized. There’s no controversy! Therefore, even the interdenominational parachurch campus ministry I am a part of (or the other ones) should have some resources on baptism, especially given that they all claim to be committed to the Great Commission (“baptizing them…”).
Well, I am going to do my best over here to get people baptized (in a Church). I strongly encourage you to also do likewise. If you know someone who isn’t baptized, tell them it’s a sin. And tell your pastor that, whether he’s a topical or expositional preacher, his application point should at some point be “repent and be baptized”.
Note: A very famous pastor is trying to get 2000 people to get baptized and join his Church membership this Easter. His strategy involves giving an incentive package, including a free subscription to his magazine and a free photo of the event (where they will be baptized by the top dog himself!). The above comments do not endorse such marketing of Baptism.

Is that guy trying to get in Guinness Book of world records for most baptisms performed?

When I read about it, it didn't sound like his purpose ;)
Adam, have you heard Dever argue that people shouldn't be baptized 'til they're 18? I think it's kind of weak.
Is the second part of your entry commenting on how much discussion there's been over the paedo/credo debate, while there's relatively little discussion of the command to be baptized? If it is, I'd certainly agree.

Yeah, Dave, I think this pastor's intentions are probably good (or at least not very bad). It's the mistake of using marketing techniques to build the Church of Jesus Christ that I'm not cool with.
Peter, I probably wouldn't agree with Dever, but haven't thought too much about it. This post was not inspired by the latest debate about Baptism, though I guess it responds to it briefly.

I totally agree about the importance of baptism as a command.
Question, then. Given that most churches and most resources don't emphasize it enough, what do you think are the implications of not emphasizing baptism enough, for the believer and for the Church?

hey Jer,
yeah, i guess i am working on the assumption that teaching it matters.
Well, I didn't actually plan on thinking extensively beyond how this affects me personally. So, I'll just tell you two ways it impacts me/the Christian circles around me.
First, for me, it affects me very practically, in that I lack quality materials which I can use to challenge people to get baptized.
Second, there are many Christians who have been saved for a very long time, yet have not been baptized or have had a very very late baptism (a few names come straight to mind) who might have taken part in this participation in the Body of Christ/identification with Christ if their Church/university group/favourite pastor had emphasized it appropriately.

I think that there's something to be said for being obedient even when it doesn't seem to make sense or have a purpose.
I, a credobaptist, think that baptism is important in celebrating conversion. In fact, Tim Keller, a paedobaptist, said that one advantage that credobaptists have is to make a big deal out of salvation, to motivate people to be evangelistic and to encourage them that not every unregenerate person is reprobate.
Anyway, that said, if someone is disobedient about getting baptized it communicates that baptism is not important. One aspect of us being obedient is to model the importance of something to younger believers.
I hope that made sense.

Hey Adam,
Very interesting thoughts you share, especially because I'm facing a lot of the similar issues here. True, baptism here is a much "bigger" deal than it is in N.America, because of the almost certain severance of family ties. But of course Jesus foresaw that and made it very clear that we must make very clear with Whom our allegiance lies. Not easy, that's for sure. We must keep persevering in prayer for these individuals!
